NFL=Not For Long

The Seahawks franchise is now in the midst of a total overhaul with the firing of Jim Mora. Recent success winning division titles and a Super Bowl run in the '05 season has been followed with two dismal seasons of less than stellar play. And a four-game losing streak to end the '09 season leaves a bitter taste in the mouths of the people who matter most: Seahawks fans.

So now the Seahawks need a new head coach and coaching staff on top of a new GM. Who will they be?

Rumors are flying on the message board that USC coach Pete Carroll is a candidate for the head coaching vacancy. He last coached in the NFL in 1999 and was 33-31 in four seasons - one with the Jets and three years with the Patriots - and he made the playoffs twice. Carroll would likely demand a fairly substantial level of control over staffing and personnel decisions - as a coach and President maybe?

And as it turns out, the LA Times reported today (1/8) that Carroll met with Seahawks CEO Tod Leiweke and other members of the organization earlier this week. The Times also said that the two sides are close to a five-year deal that would make Carroll both president and head coach.

In the end it's all about winning, and as Jim Mora and former GM Tim Ruskell found out, not enough wins means Not For Long in the NFL; at least in Seattle.
